The Rise of MONKEYTOWN and 50 WEAPONS

50 Weapons, run by EDM gurus Modeselektor, has been on the horizon for a while. Its now finally starting to step up with a phatty new release featuring remixes of Modeselektor's gem "Art & Cash", as well as a sweet single from none other than Night Slugs co-founder Bok Bok. Releases 001 and 002 from 50 Weapons were total white labels and still relatively hard to find. The first featured a remix of 50 Cent's "Just a Lil Bit" and the second was a two-sided 12" with tracks from Monkeytown artist Siriusmo and BPitch Control bredren Housemeister. Both were sickness. However you must peep the newness from Monkeytown so as to stay as excited about this stuff as we are. Recently, MDSLKTR's new Monkeytown records released Siriusmo's first full length album "The Plasterer of Love". Now you can be excited for some more upcoming tracks from the likes of SBTRKT, 2562 and Ramadanman to name a few. Here are some tracks from both labels that are worth owning and spinning!

Art & Cash Remixes (50 Weapons):

Tes La Rok

No stranger to dancefloor madness and sick dub tunes, Tes La Rok is a worldwide phenomenon. The founder of Noppa Recordings and hailing out of Helsinki, Finland Tes La Rok has made himself famous for throwing down sick, roots-y dub beats (Patois vocal bytes included) with amazing control of dirty, gritty wobble bass lines. On top of that, dude's label has released tracks by the likes of DJG, 12th Planet, Kromestar and Mungo's Hi-Fi. PROPS! Keep watching Noppa for more great releases this fall.

Here are a few tracks I keep on repeat:

Top Cat & Jack Murda - Drunken Master (Tes La Rok Remix)

Mungo's Hi-Fi feat. Brother Culture - Wikidness (Tes La Rok Remix)

Tes La Rok feat. Uncle Sam - Up In The VIP

Siriusmo - Einmal In Der Woche Schreien

King Crimson - Behind the Scenes

Here's a rare, behind-the-scenes documentary on one of the most underrated bands of the last century and one of my personal favorites - King Crimson. Probably a bit too intimidating for their time. No doubt they were ahead of it.

Visit King-Crimson.com to purchase the first in a series of remastered 40th Anniversary CD sets.

King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King

Noisia - Machine Gun

Hard electro with quite the abstract clip to go with it. What a way to start a Friday.

The single is now available on iTunes with remixes by Amon Tobin, 16 Bit and Spor.

Deadmau5 rocking Noisia @ Foot Locker

Everybody's favorite Mau5, always in action, this time at a Foot Locker in his hometown, Toronto. Here we see him playing Noisia's uberawesome new track "Alpha Centauri" off their newly released album, "Split the Atom". We highly suggest you give these dutch gentlemen a listen if you haven't already (the album is definitely worth a buy). From DnB to Dubstep to Hip Hop to Electro, Noisia seems to have something for everyone - and a lot of it.

Check out their official website at www.noisia.nl

Adidas - Star Wars Cantina 2010

One thing I really like about the soccer world cups are the commercial battles between Nike and Adidas. In case you haven't seen it, here's Adidas' latest celebrity filled ad, released a couple days ago. You're bound to come across this one a lot throughout the next month..
This time it's Daft Punk, Snoop Dogg, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown (of Stone Roses), Ciara and as always David Beckham starring in a remake of the famous Cantina scene from Star Wars. Here's the unedited version of the ad:

Pfadfinderei & Modeselektor - Labland DVD

via Boomkat:
"Absolutely immense DVD package from acclaimed Berlin design house Pfadfinderei, the people responsible for Bpitch Control's graphic design and, in particular, working closely with the unstoppable Modeselektor. Labland features over an hour of completely exclusive music from Modeselektor - a visual music album pioneering a tight combination of music, film & graphic design in mindboggling ways. The emphasis here, of course, is on tight edits both in terms of visual and audio editing, squashed rhythms, bass, shapes & colours, inventing a new kind of synchronicity. Pfadfinderei distort, twist and warp space in response to Modeselektor's mashed-up samples and low-end heavy backdrops, an absolutely deadly mix. Easily the best DVD we've seen of its kind, for all intents and purposes a brand new Modeselektor album given an extra dimension or two, all recorded in beautifully crisp 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound. A massive recommendation!!!!"

Watch "Labland" in a 9-part playlist (the first of which is below) or buy the Labland DVD here and enjoy it in all its beauty.

Figgy

Friends of the wonk, meet Figgy. This gentleman has been keeping the scene alive on the east side and his tracks have gotten heavy airplay on glitch.fm radio, so this post is long overdue.

But we'll leave it up to our neighbor to introduce himself best:
"Figgy aka Mike Ferrigno is a New England based producer/DJ who’s glitched out bass heavy music holds no prejudice toward tempos. Armed with a laptop and midi controllers Figgy’s live sets are filled with custom edits, remixes, mashups and originals. Not one to stand around, when he’s not pushing buttons or tweaking knobs you can be sure to find him jumping around like a maniac hopelessly in love with bass."

Have a listen to what Figgy likes to call "Krunky, Dubby Bass Bangers" and be sure to read more about him, download more free tracks and mixes or just give a shout at Figgymusic.com

The Renegade of Amstrad

Here's another treat from one of our followers/up-and-coming producers. The Renegade of Amstrad, from the UK, gives us his modern interpretation of the Kraftwerk classic that made them immortal - "Das Modell". He recreated the melody with a couple of arpeggiators, which is an immediate noticeable difference to the original.
But there's a few more treats hidden on his myspace. I especially enjoyed "Doubt" and "Fight Nite", the latter of which contains some samples that video gamers may be familiar with. Definitely give them a listen.

I'm just taking a guess here, but to me it seems like The Renegade of Amstrad is highly influenced by or grew up in the 1990's techno culture in England, Hacienda and so forth. I went to my first serious parties in Manchester during that time (spent all my summers there back in the day) and I gotta say it sparked it ALL for me.

We're always psyched to hear what all of you are up to creatively. We consider ourselves a dedicated link in the support chain for independent talent, so we're all about sharing the goods with the world and spreading the word of awesome. Keep 'em comin' guys!

Here's the original, performed live on German tv.

Artist feature: Monsieur Adi

Monsieur Adi, poster child of Paris label Technofavrik, recently released his debut EP "We Are The Romans" and leaves us squealing for more! The french producer/fashion design student caught our attention with his remix to Ellie Goulding's Starry Eyed. The original off Goulding's no. 1 debut album is quite the hit in Europe and I'm sure it'll be the same for the States when it gets released there. It got a lil airplay in "Kick-Ass", which I watched yesterday and I gotta say I liked it.
The success of the original brought on a slew of remixes from all genres, but few are really striking. Monsieur Adi instantly stands out of the lot.

Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed (Monsieur Adi Remix)

And the rest of his music is just as pleasing to the ear. Monsieur Adi's interesting list of influences includes Vivaldi and it certainly shows. Some of his material, namely "We Are The Romans", has a very classical-influenced buildup.

Drinkmusik caught up with Monsieur Adi and got to ask him a couple o tings. Here's what he had to say about..

..his studio setup:
My studio setup is very simple with just a keyboard and a microphone and a lot of software(Audition/Ableton/Acid Pro) and VSTs. I purchased some EastWest/Quantum Leap sounds some summers ago and it's just amazing to work with if you love making cinematic orchestration. Very fantastic!

..artists we should watch out for:
Well my current favorites are definitely the cool guys who remixed my debut EP 'We Are The Romans': Flashworx, Renegade, Wolfchild, Overthrill, and Freak You. Sebastian and Christian of Overthrill have been long time friends of mine and their work is just powerful and Franck (Freak You) is not only genius at his own music, but also at discovering new talent. I have to also mention my good friend Pyramid who is just starting, but is so very talented!! Other than my friends, I love what SomethingALaMode is doing as well as Iamamiwhoami. I think that's Jonna Lee, though?

..
the US music scene compared to that in France/Europe:
Well, I did not realize how much musical taste differed depending on where you will go. The European music scene is very alive and I think there's more of a support for independent artists who don't mind experimenting with different textures and sounds and being different. The pop music scene in the US all sounds alike to me, but I think there's more out there than what's in the front.

..how to define "Drinkmusik":
You need water to survive, so music is the same. Drink music and you'll live!
Or you can just get drunk off of music.

Merci Adi!!

Monsieur Adi - We Are The Romans

An album entitled "Empire" is in the making and soon to come. Until then, keep up-to-date with Monsieur Adi or simply show some love on facebook and/or twitter.

Monsieur Adi's EP "We Are The Romans" is available on iTunes, Beatport, Juno Download, Amazon and 7Digital.

Punky Blaster - Live @ Gala Des Grandes Écoles (Paris)

Punky Blaster have already been convincing us of their production skills, starting with a Mr. Oizo rmx they sent us a couple months ago. It was only to be a matter of time til we got a taste of these guys live.
Here's a 20 minute rip from a gig they did in front of 400o people at Gala Des Grandes Écoles in Paris. A compilation of hard-hitting electro with plenty of thump. And a roaring mass confirming the crowd compatibility. Enjoy.

DRT UK - Track Spotlight

Picasso once said, "Good artists copy; great artists steal." This statement couldn't ring more true in electronic music. Sampling has always been a fundamental tool in composing, and the current trend in technology indicates a lot more to come.

If any of you know 16bit, you know they're a mighty production team. One of the members has a sick garage solo project, DRT. His track "Rising Sun" is a perfect example of great artists stealing. Right off the bat, you can hear a striking similarity to Ratatat in the timbre of the main line.

DRT - Rising Sun

Now listen to Ratatat's "Seventeen Years":

Ratatat - Seventeen Years

Nice.

London Crunk Crew of Trouble & Bass fame, The Boogaloo Crew, has fortunately taken note of DRT's masterpiece and refixed it with a sped-up, more syncopated beat for the dancefloor. My current song on repeat. Enjoy.

Emalkay - A.G.S.

I've had Emalkay's When I Look At You 12" for a good 4 months, and realized the other day that I have never even listened to the B-side. When I threw on A.G.S. (Angie Got Stoned) for the first time, I was stunned by the quality and beauty of every angle of the track - the bassline, the vocal sample and the shifty upbeat chords in particular.

I almost think this track should've been on the A side of some other release. This 12" is definitely one of the best buys of the past year. Sexy tune.

Pangaea

Pangaea is one of 3 who run Hessle Audio (along with Ramadanman & Ben UFO), one of my favorite labels in the UK. They've now put out 12 amazing releases, including their own stuff as well as material from Untold, TRG, Joe and James Blake. 3 of those 12 releases have been Pangaea's own, and in the line of downtempo and mellow dubstep (and even reaching over the aisle into techno), these tracks are no less than amazing.

'Router,' 'Bear Witness,' 'Memories,' 'I Can't Stop This Feeling [Pangaea remix]' and 'Why' seem the most solid of Pangaea originals, however since there really aren't that many in total, it wouldn't hurt to post the entirety of Pangaea's discog chronologically.

Coiled (Hessle Audio 02, Nov 2007)

TRG - Missed Calls EP

This is a release that keeps growing on me as time goes on. It's not often that you find an EP whose entirety of tracks is so high in quality. This EP came out in 2008 on Subway Records and Gizmo picked it up at Toolbox Records in Paris in 2009, so I found it relatively late in the game. But I guess that speaks for the quality of the doublepack - diverse, groovy and just plain fucking CRASSSS. It will be just as great 15 years from now. Here's all 6 tracks to peep...and please just buy the thing here if you don't already own eet

01 TRG - Missed Calls

02 Drum Tribe

03 Ghetto Romance

04 Resistance Break

05 Feel For You

06 Hoods Up

This is an epic closer track, pulling in the dubstep banger for the end

TRG [discography] [blog] is from Eastern Europe (Bucharest, Romania). He was just in New York City in mid February for the Unsound Festival with 2562, Untold, Pole, Faulty DL and Dave Q (among others) [why the fuuuuck did i have to miss that] and he'll be touring around the UK for a minute in March. He had some phatty mixes for FACT and Electronic Explorations, and has releases out on Mad Decent [forthcoming], Audio Phreaks, Hessle Audio, Tempa, Hotflush, Tube 10, Soul Motive and Immerse Records. Here's a mix to leave you wit:

RJD2 - Let There Be Horns

Here's the clip to RJD2's latest release Let There Be Horns, taken from his 4th studio album "The Colossus". Released in early January, the vid got people fired up for the album, which followed Jan 19th.

The album has reviewers of popular opinion leaders clashing their heads, Resident Advisor gave it 1 out of 5, URB and Spin gave it 4 out 5, and Pitchfork gave it a 6.8. Clearly it's not everybody's thing, too many people were expecting what they already heard. But RJD2 is experimenting, playing. His sound has evolved, it's more laid back, more happy. I have to say I don't like every track on the album, but as a whole it's a good listen. If we're doin the "out-of-ten"-thing, I'll give it a 6. Won't have everyone celebrating on the streets, but they won't be disappointed either. Preview the entire album below and see for yourself!

Wu-Tang: Enter The Dubstep

Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol.2: Enter The Dubstep [buy]

Been meaning to post this for a while. Great compilation out on iHipHop/FrankRadio late last year showcasing the best of Wu-Tang rap over the best of dupstep's dirtier-side producers. Although some of the album is a bit shove-gravel-in-your-face 'ardcore overboard underproduced dubstep, most of it is bad ASSSSS. Here's some of me favs:

Lord Jamar & RZA - Deep Space [Jay Da Flex & Yoof remix]

Casual - Think Differently [Hellfire Machina remix]

U-God & Method Man - Wu-Tang [DZ remix]

GZA & Justice Kareem - Cinema [Chimpo remix]

creepiest song Evar

Method Man, U-God & Prodigal Sunn - Love Don't Cost (A Thing) / Still Grimey (Nebulla & Dore remixes]

Bronze Nazareth, Kevlaar 7 & Phillie - New Year Banga [Rogue Star remix]

Wu-Tang Clan - Alphabets [Dakimh instrumental remix]

Son One - Now Or Never [Parson remix]

GZA, Masta Killa, RZA, Ghostface Killah & Ka - Pencil / My Piano / Firehouse [Soroka remixes]

TRUMPETTTT

and best one for last:

Bronze Nazareth, Solomon Childs & Byata - Street Corners [Scuba scythe remix]

DIE ANTWOORD - Taking over the interwebz!

Holy shit these guys are nuts. Crazy rap trio (sometimes a quartet with local artist Leon Botha) from Cape Town that love to smoke big phat spliffs, my bru. I'm not sure how to sum it up, but you can check out their album for free on the net and get an idea for yourself. MC and leader, NINJA, spits raucous rhymes in an incomprehensible tone and language. You can look up the lyrics, only to be mesmerized by how much of it is actually in English. Then you have the "fresh, futuristic bitch" (gorgeous) YOLANDI followed by beatmaker DJ HI-TEK (no, not Talib's Hi-Tek, might be some issues down the line...). Check out this interview with Ninja and Yolandi to get a better idea of what they...uh...erm...represent...

Luckily for us, they've posted their entire album on Youtube. Here are a couple of the faves:

Die Antwoord - Beat Boy

Die Antwoord - Enter The Ninja

Die Antwoord - Wat Pomp

Die Antwoord - Dagga Puff

Die Antwoord - Liewe Maatjies

Die Antwoord - $copie

Die Antwoord - $copie (Live)

And if S. Africa couldn't get any better, check this out. A live performance in a taxi...This doesn't happen in the states, folks! Only thing that comes to mind is this. Anyways:

So show your support by watching the vids over and over again so we can get them over here and have them teach some of our own performers a thing or two. Now in traditional DRINKMUSIK fashion, a short picture tribute to the immensely gorgeous Yolandi Visser!

Punky Blaster

Punky Blaster from France sent us this sweeeeet remix of Positif by Mr. Oizo. I think the original is friggin awesome, but I always thought it could have worked well with more of a punch-to-the-face drum kit. Apparently that's what these guys thought too! There's been a slew of remixes to this track - Vektorkat, LFO, Mr. Flash to name a few good ones - this one's definitely among my favorites. I like beats that sound like a synthesizer being raped. Or doing Karate.

History of the Boombox

"Before iPods (or even CDs) there were boomboxes. It's been 20 years since they disappeared from the streets, but the nostalgia they evoke is about more than stereo equipment. We've changed the way we listen to music — and to each other. Watch a video about the history of the boombox."

History of the Boombox

New Goldfrapp March 22nd

So I seem to be one of the last to know, but apparently Goldfrapp is releasing their new album "Head First" end of next month. "Rocket" is the first release - and I'm hoping the whole album isn't built up on that so fashionably retro 80's style. The aerobics training video kind. The Van Damme montage kind (I swear, listen to it!). She'll be successful with it. Drunk Europeans will go crazy for that shit. Me tinks the economy might have taken its toll on Mrs. G-to-tha-frizzle. Waiting on the rest of the album. Alas, here's the tracklist:

01. Rocket (Find it on HypeM)
02. Believer
03. Alive
04. Dreaming
05. Head First
06. Hunt
07. Shiny And Warm
08. I Wanna Life
09. Voicething

Deux Helix - The Theta Mind Oscillations

Features four new tracks of their own, my personal favorite being their Peanut Club remix for Noob & Brodinski. Be sure to check out Deux Helix's SoundCloud for more of em.

Electro Coffee Table

Renouned designer and engineer Moritz Waldemeyer teamed up with interior design team Wallpaper to create an eye-popping, futuristic home disco accessory. Out came a coffee table/iPod dock, with an integrated "Haze Machine" that poops lasers and smoke, turning the whole thing into a dancing cage. Giggity giggity.
