DJ through your IPhone

New Zealand based software company Inklen designed an app called Tonetable that lets you control digital vinyl systems such as Traktor or Serato through your IPhone.

Daft Punk ready for Tron Legacy

Haven't heard of Daft Punk in a while, until I came across this exciting news: our friends from France are set to compose and produce the soundtrack to the new Tron movie, Tron Legacy, which will come to theatres next year. Check out the preview below, looks pretty keeewwl.

They revealed a bike from the movie at a Comic-Con, with a new untitled Daft Punk track running in the background. The sound quality isn't the best, but it's all there is for now!

"How would it be, if a house was dreaming"

Here's a one-off random non-music related vid that a friend showed me today. It's just too amazing not to share with you guys. A mind boggling 3D projection onto a gallery in Hamburg, Germany, titled "How would it be, if a house was dreaming".

Watch it on full screen. It'll be the coolest thing you'll see all day, guaranteed.

Pan-Pot

Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix's's's insane live sets and critically acclaimed, intelligent minimal tech-/house-whatever productions have brought them quite a fast growing fan base over the past couple of years. Pan-Pot came a long way since graduating from Berlin's School of Audio Engineering. It was a quick rise to popularity throughout Berlin, but it wasn't until the release of "Pan-o-Rama" (2007) that they had their real breakthrough, nationwide and beyond.
Now Pan-Pot has a packed schedule, booked out for ages, touring through Europe, playing gigs every other day. If you ever have the chance to see them, GO!! These guys are a guaranteed party.

Kode 9 interview

Steve Goodman aka Kode 9 talks about his upcoming book "Sonic Warfare", his past years as a teacher and the amount of crap music that gets sent to him on a regular basis.

Something for circuit nerds

A Bitcrusher is a digital audio effect, which produces a distortion by the reduction of the resolution or bandwidth of digital audio data. The resulting quantization noise may produce a “warmer” sound impression, or a harsh one, depending on the amount of reduction.

A number stored digitally has a resolution given as n bits, where there are 2n possible values of the number. If one reduces the number of bits used to store the number, the number of possible values of the number is decreased, and thus the resolution decreases, leading to distortion. For example, a standard CD has a resolution of 16 bits, thus there are 216 possible values for any given part of the musical waveform. If this is reduced to approx. 8 bits, distortions can be noticed, reducing the quality. These distortions add to the original overtone in such a way that the wave shape becomes angular. This can produce a “warmer” sound impression than the original waveform, especially if the wave is rounded off in certain ways. Often this is used with techno or electronic music consciously, without regard to fidelity.

An example of a sound distorted by a bitcrusher is in the introduction to the song “Chemicals” from the album "Shrink" by The Notwist. The samples used in the Roland TR 909 drum machine, for example, has a resolution of 6 bits, leading to a similar sound.

But why is daddy Sweenie telling you this (why did he copy it from wikipedia)?

Check this guy out:

Artist of the Day: RAMADANMAN

Ramadanman will be in Boston in 2 days! Bassic booked him at Good Life down in da Chinatownz, and it couldn't be better timing. Not only is it FINALLY a weekend night show for some excellent dubstep, but Good Life has just recently renovated their space. I can't wait to see the new layout - I'm sure it will be magical.

Ramadanman comes from North London, and has just finished up university in Leeds. After seeing Mala (of Digital Mystikz fame) at London's #1 Dubstep night FWD>> (at Plastic People) in April 2006, he whipped up a few tracks, got them mastered at Transition and released them himself online.

Since then a slew of labels have smartly released his always proper tunes, including legendary SoulJazz, Tempa, Fabric, 2ndDrop, BareDubs, ApplePips and his own label started in 2007 with college buddies Pangaea & BenUFO, Hessle Audio.

Here's a vid from his April 2009 release of Humber (Apple Pips #5):

Here's some promo mixes that you should snag as well. Chock full of amazing tunes - most of them unreleased - these mixes will definitely stand the test of time.

Wolfgang Gartner

Over 50.000 sold units on Beatport, six respective Top 10s, three video game licenses - all in less than a year and a half - make Wolfgang Gartner an artist to keep an eye on. Well, his impressive resume comes with a long list of serious ear candy. Anyone should be quick to point out elements familiar through Deadmau5, Justice, Daft Punk, Crookers, Prydz or Switch. Gartner listed them among his influences and it definitely shows. In a reeeally good way!

In an interview with Beatportal, Gartner had a word to say about the phenomenon of sub-categorizing house music:

"..dance music is a funny thing; it’s all really the same when you step outside and look at the big picture — at least with house music. All of these sub-genres we’ve got like electro house, tech house, deep house — they are all just slight variations on this one groove that has been around since the 1980s, and are all basically just disco beats.
I can appreciate that trance and drum & bass, for example, are a completely different vibe, but I still find all of the genre separations in house music a tad funny.

At least simplify it a little bit! (laughs)"

FREE BEACH BOYS CONCERT!!!

I had to post something up about this.

Sadly, I doubt Brian Wilson will make it. But who cares?? Its still the BEACH BOYS free at the Hatchshell!!

103.3 is doing a contest to see who can ask the best question to The Beach Boys. (stupid.) But it gets you a chance to meet them in person (most likely sans-Wilson sadly).

From WROR's website:
"What would you ask The Beach Boys if you had the chance?! Well submit your question below and if we select it you'll get the chance to meet The Beach Boys at the Oldies 103.3 Free Summer Concert Series on Saturday, July 25th and ask them your question in person!!!"

Think you have the question that will make it?

Moderat - Les Grandes Marches

This song has been around for a couple of months, those of you that have listened to Moderat's amazing self titled album or saw them on tour will know it. The clip, I believe, is a bit newer. It's a trip.

Ableton has news for producers and it's very simple: buy Ableton Live 8 between July 1 and August 31 2009 and get Sampler, worth 99 EUR/129 USD, for free.

A little about Sampler:

Sampler is Ableton's advanced sampling instrument. Apart from having a perfectly descriptive name, it's extremely versatile, combining traditional sampling features with advanced sound design functions. Sampler can handle any kind of multi-gigabyte instrument library you care to name. But the fun really starts when you go in deep and start sound-shaping—Sampler gives you control over every detail of your sound. Be prepared to create vibrant and complex sounds from even the most basic audio source material.

Modeselektor Makes A Label!!!

Monkeytown Records is the new venture of Berlin Party Gurus Gernot Bronsert and Sebastien Szary, aka Modeselektor. Quote: "Anything Pharell Williams does, we can do better." That is pretty much what these two have been exhibiting for us over the past few years. Their gradual ascent into Music History has been paved with innovation, and there newest feat/adventure/business/hobby is no different.

They've started out with local Berlin funktronica King, Siriusmo. A gem from day one, all of his tracks are unmissable and unforgettable. It's been a long time coming, but he's finally got an album for us and DAMN if its not giving me a hard-on just thinking about it! Here are some keepers that you NEED to hear in order to survive:

Siriusmo - The Uninvited Guest

Siriusmo - High Together

Siriusmo - Nights Off

Deadmau5 - "For Lack of a Better Name" album due Sep

Deadmau5 has officially announced the release of his fourth studio album. "For Lack of a Better Name" will hit the stores September 22nd and shall have a lot to live up to after the massive commercial success of its predecessor, "Random Album Title".

The release will be followed by a US/Canada tour that will close at Boston's Roxy in late November. We were lucky enough to catch Deadmau5 at the Paradise Rock Club in April. It was quite a show. Don't miss out!

Deadmau5 is currently one of the most successful electronic music producers on the face of the planet. His world tour (sponsored by Beatport and Puma) is a huge success all around the globe, his label Mau5trap has sold around 75000 units on Beatport alone, vinyl sales top 22000. 13 of his tracks were number ones on Beatport, including "Not Exactly", which remains the site's best selling track ever. I won't even begin to list the awards he has won this past year. There were many. He was also nominated for a Grammy. Point being - this guy is good.

Sebastian Bosch

Introducing: Sebastian Bosch. This gentleman is slowly getting his name around in the scene, mainly due to his frequent appearances at Berlin's legendary "Tresor" club. His latest track, a remix on colleague Dan Reed's "Herbstgezwitscher" release, is very easy on the ears and I've been listening to it a lot. Definitely my favorite on the record. I'll try to make it to his gig at Tresor next week, I heard his skills behind the table are also supposed to be quite profound. Keep your eyes open for more Aspekt Records releases, they've brought forward some pretty nifty tunes.
