It's always excellent news to find out that Modeselektor will be hitting up the East Coast - even though the last time they were here was only 4 months ago at the Highline Ballroom. Fresh off of a night at Igloo Fest in Montreal, Modeselektor came through New York City by means of the Bowery Ballroom, with house master Housemeister.
Venturing from Boston to NYC for a show can be a production. Gotta hype the show and to get a solid crew to head down. Find a place to stay, have enough money to survive and hopefully get hooched-up, and get home all in one piece. Needless to say, the show better be damn good, otherwise it's not worth the effort.
Good thing it's never a debate when trying to decide if Modeselektor will be good enough for the trek. We arrived at the Bowery at around 10:45 I guess? And Housemeister was already into his set. We got our buns up there and enjoyed some tight and heavy house. The crowd knew what was up when he dropped Inordertodance. It's always nice to see a DJ who produces his own stuff simply spinning records live and killing it.
After a couple of drinks, Modeselektor was on stage - relatively early. They killed the dancefloor with staples like Black Block, Hyper Hyper, Deboutonner, The Dark Side of the Sun, and 2000007, and added a few other clutch tracks (Godspeed and Sucker Pin) among some new ones, at least that I've never heard.
Their set was dope, nobody has to ever doubt that. But despite a solid set list, the show was somewhat of a disappointment. So I'll blame it on the venue! The sound was too quiet - we're supposed to feel our liver quiver! Come on Bowery! And what's up with the show being over before 2am in NYC? At least I didn't blow too much money on drinks at your estab.
But who cares! I saw a huge blow-up monkey, a dancing butcher holding a pig's head, and a decked-out chicken blowing his feathers everywhere for the last half the show - and who can ever forget the always enjoyable 2 bottles of champagne splooged all over the crowd?
Overall a trip well worth making. GO SEE MODESELEKTOR WHENEVER YOU GET THE DAMN CHANCE!!!
