HOTFLUSH PODCASTS

Label of the hour, Hotflush Recordings, has been supplying us with some damn fine material. Mount Kimbie, Scuba, Sigha, Untold, Joy Orbison, Pangaea - what these artists have in common is that their tunes are hard to categorize. The kind where the last 20 comments on youtube are kids arguing about what genre it is, agreeing on something like "new-rave-dub-hop-abilly". But ultimately, all of these artists have a sound that is symptomatic for the label itself. And that's what makes Hotflush so hot. Music that is hard to define, but obviously Hotflush.

Apart from all the sweet releases, they're bringing us a podcast every month from one of their artists. This month's podcast comes from San Fransisco's Jus Wan.

You can also pick up the podcasts directly from the Hotflush website. We're just making your life a little easier!

Oneman - Fall For Autumn Mix 2009

Talented UK DJ Oneman supplied XLR8R with a crispy crafted mix best described in its name. Summer's coming to an end, the frequency of festivals and outdoor parties is slowly going down. Enjoy what's left of it, wrap up and then go inside cuz that's where it's happening now. This chill mix is for those that really still want to sit outside when the party is over or someplace else.
Features fresh tracks by some of the UK's most sought after artists, including Skream, Zomby, Mala, Scuba, D1 and others.

The SCB side of Scuba

The more techno-oriented stuff isn't really my forte, although I really dig it when the time is right. And this mix just makes the time right.

Scuba, creator of Hotflush Recordings, has recently done an exclusive mix for the MNML SSGS blog under his relatively new SCB moniker. The author of the post, PC (Chris), says, "SCB's mix not only belongs among the best SSG mixes so far (which, I think I can say openly, has been an incredibly high standard), I think.... well, I'll let your ears tell your brain, but personally I reckon SCB has just re-set the standard," and comments on the post range from "scuba represents the distillation of everything that is great about electronic music in 2009" to "How nice is this ?! I thought much of the hype surrounding Scuba was just that - hype. Eating my words now. Gorgeousness. Thank you" to "This is a total burner, LOVE it!" to "unbelievable mix, this is the exact fusion of everything ive been loving out of the dubstep crossover from the last few years. but now finally it seems techno has truelly engulfed the new influences. techno is evolving once again and this is exactly where its at right now for me."

Here 'tis - enjoy!

Hotflush Recordings

Hotflush Recordings has been getting some more recognition lately. Straight out of London, this label has brought forth some pretty innovative artists and some darn good music. Much of it has that muffled underground sound, which is awesome.

(From their Bio:)
"Hotflush was started in 2003 with the aim of giving a platform to music which doesn’t fit into a certain category. In a dance scene divided into genres and sub-genres the value of music is lost, and Hotflush seeks to bridge gaps between areas of the scene to stimulate the sharing of influences and ideas."

Hotflush claimed Scuba, Mount Kimbie, Sigha and DZ (who we talked about a while back) as some of their proteges over the years and has quite an exciting lineup of more talents for future releases. Don't forget to check out their mixtapes! Free stuff! Wooo!

BADMAN PRESS

Just discovered Badman Press, a label out of Ottawa featuring DZ, Threesixty, Dubsworth, Bombaman, Kozee, Bakir, RedEyz and High Deaf (Threesixty & DZ collab).
I first heard DZ on Scuba's XLR8R podcast and was hooked. He's really mastered the wobbly bass aspect of dubstep and taken it to another level. The riffs are long and diverse. Like Wagner.

Check these out:

DZ - "Old Timers"

Woogie - "End Dub" (DZ Remix)

In addition to the decent collection of tunes to choose from on his Myspace, you can also hear a sweet collection here.

SONG I LIKE - Mount Kimbie - "Maybes"

I found this song on a mix Scuba did for XLR8R not too long ago (link here) and was so mesmerized I had to stop working and backtrack to listen to it in full. After a bit of research, I learned that its by a new group called MOUNT KIMBIE and they are awesome. I downloaded their EP (so can you!) and all four tracks are pretty amazing.

"Maybes" is a ballsy track that is pretty minimal and dubsteppy but more innovative than a lot of the shit out there today. Its as if the two sisters from Coco Rosie got drunk and hooked up with Cornelius while Diplo filmed the whole thing!

You can listen to "Maybes" here.

Not sure how long that link will be working, but I just started a new mix with it at the intro, so I'll post that for your hearing pleasure soon.
